Satakieli has been nominated for the Suuri journalistipalkinto (the Great Journalist Award) prize in the category Innovator of the Year. The nominees were announced at the media museum Merkki in Helsinki on 26 February.

The Innovator of the Year (Vuoden uudistaja) is awarded to a journalist or a team of journalists who have brought about a significant innovation in journalistic work for the industry or have reformed media distribution channels or narrative methods.

According to the jury, Satakieli competes with the major national media in terms of journalistic quality.

“[It] deals with topics that are often overlooked by Finnish media. A journal with a multi-disciplinary background and language skills has access to sources that many other journals do not have access to,” the jury wrote in its citation.

The nomination is a significant recognition of Satakieli’s work, says Tuomas Pulsa, editor-in-chief of Satakieli

“The reception and audience statistics of Satakieli’s stories show that there is a great demand for our journalism. It is great to see that it is also recognised more widely within the industry.”

The Suuri journalistipalkinto prize is Finland’s most important annual recognition for journalism. There are four categories. In addition to the Innovator of the Year, the awards include Journalist of the Year, Story of the Year and Regional Story of the Year.
